Last month Ipsos published their International Women’s Day survey, which unearthed some interesting statistics about younger generations’ views on gender equality in 31 countries. For a generation often designated as ‘woke’, Generation Z seems to hold some pretty conservative values on the topic.
For example, over half of Gen Z and Millennials agree with the statement: “when it comes to giving women equal rights with men, things have gone far enough in my country” (57% Gen Z, 60%, of Millennials) compared with two in five Baby boomers (43%).”
Additionally, Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to agree that “a man who stays home to look after his children is less of a man” (25%, 27% respectively) than Gen X (20%) and Baby Boomers (11%).
But gender plays a big role in the respondents answers as well; asked whether “we have gone so far in promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men”, 60% of Gen Z men agreed, compared to 40% of Gen Z women.
This backlash against progressives comes as no surprise. Recently we wrote a more extensive article on the cultural and societal shift towards conservatism, and some of its causes.
